Identity of Cuban Embassy shooter is unclear (updated)

|

Diario de las Américas is reporting that the man accused of shooting up the Cuban embassy early Thursday had been “diagnosed with schizophrenia for many years and is obsessed with the idea of being persecuted.”
The newspaper’s source for the information is an unnamed pastor who supposedly had contact with the suspect, Alexander Alazo, 42.

This is the Alejandro Alazo that the Diario de las Américas identifies as the shooter. The paper said an unnamed pastor provided the photo.

The pastor told Diario de las Américas the person he believes is the suspect is a Christian who has “been obsessed with the idea that State Security of the Cuban regime is persecuting him.” (See “Embassy shooter told police he was homeless, heard voices“).
The individual in the photo is not the same person as a man named Alexander Alazo Hernández on Facebook and identified as the shooter by many media outlets on Thursday. (I posted photos of Alazo Hernández on this page earlier, but took them down on Friday after it appeared he wasn’t the suspect).
Journalists with La Hora de Cuba located Alazo Hernández in Cuba and he said it’s a case of mistaken identity.
Alazo Hernández said his phone was “burning up” with calls from people asking about the case, but said he’s clearly not the suspect.
“He’s black and I’m white,” Alazo Hernández told La Hora de Cuba.
I haven’t seen any documents in the case other than this incident report.
Public records contain information about a 42-year-old named Alexander Alazo who lived in Florida and Texas and had three different Post Office boxes, including one in Ashburn, Virginia, just 30 miles from Washington, D.C.
The man was born in May 1977. I have not seen any information showing that authorities have confirmed that this is the same man who was arrested. The five street addresses linked to the man in public records are:

  • 20310 NE 3rd Ct., Apt. 10, Miami, Florida
  • 222 E. 54th St., Hialeah, Florida (2011-2012)
  • 19055 NW 62nd Ave., Apt. 112, Hialeah, Florida (2011-2012)
  • 26 Diplomat Pkwy, Hallendale, Florida (2013)
  • 333 Holly Creek Ct., Apt. 1416, Spring, Texas (2013-2017)

From 2017 to 2019, the man used three Post Office boxes. According to public records, they were:

  • P.O. Box 6758, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 17112
  • P.O. Box 2564, Ashburn, Virginia, 20146
  • P.O. Box 644, Little Elm, Texas, 75068

I found several possible relatives connected to this man in public records. One is a 34-year-old woman who was born on Feb. 21, 1986. She evidently lived with Alazo in Spring, Texas, at one point.
More recent records show that the same woman worked as a registered nurse in Dededo, Guam, and used an Aubrey, Texas, address.
Police in Washington, D.C., identified Alexander Alazo as a resident of Aubrey.
Public records show that three Hialeah phone numbers, one Houston phone number and a Hotmail account with the username alex-thegreat2010 had been linked to Alazo in recent years. Such records are not always reliable, unfortunately.
